Islam, Hip-Hop, and White Supremacy
After last week’s tragedy in New Zealand, where Muslim worshippers were viciously murdered as they prayed by a white supremacy-fueled terrorist, I wanted to take a moment to give props to the contributions made to hip-hop by Muslims all over the world.
Whenever something like this happens, I think about how no other social movement that I can think of is as inclusive and sharing and collaborative as hip-hop culture -- throughout the world, crossing all borders and demographics. Followers of Islam have always been a part of that movement, in the United States and across the globe. For this episode of #HipHopInnovates with Manny Faces, I just wanted to take a moment to honor that.

International Hip-Hop, Hasan Minhaj, Upcoming Hip-Hop Conferences
A pretty well-done piece of hip-hop journalism hit the airwaves the other night, but it wasn’t from a hip-hop news site. In fact, it wasn’t from a news site at all. I’m talking about Hasan Minhaj’s “Hip-Hop and Streaming” episode of his Netflix show Patriot Act.
My $0.02 on his show, plus a few upcoming hip-hop-related conferences that I will be speaking at/presenting at/attending, at Ohio State University, Carnegie Mellon and Harvard.
That, my artist of the day, and more, on #HipHopInnovates with Manny Faces

International Woman's Day, Hip-Hop, & Manny at Ohio State, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard
I was planning to update everyone about a few interesting hip-hop-related events and conferences coming up that I happen to be speaking or presenting at, when I realized they were all being helmed by amazing women, so I thought it was fitting to speak on it for International Women’s Day.
The “Artist of the Day” is an international woman herself, a dope, dope artist from the U.S., that lives in Europe, who I met in France.
So yeah. International Women run this mutha!

Hip-Hop Is More Than Music
Hip-hop is more than music. Though many equate “hip-hop” with “rap music,” the fact is, hip-hop is a vast “culture,” as defined by organizations and academic institutions throughout the world. This distinction is often muddied and sadly, contributes to a perception that hip-hop is little more than what’s heard on the radio.
Outspoken or well-publicized individuals and media outlets which claim to showcase “the culture,” but also only focus on “the music,” don’t help.
One example: Hip-hop is working to affect policy in the U.S. Supreme Court

Hip-Hop Education Is Not A Gimmick
Hip-hop education is not a gimmick. Authenticity is important. Hip-hop-minded educators know this and are at the forefront of the movement to utilize hip-hop to improve the academic success of young people across the nation.
One such organization is #HipHopEd. A loosely knit consortium of educators and like-minded individuals that collectively discuss, promote, and protect the intersection of hip-hop and education
I’ll have many more such organizations to share with you as this series continues, but for now, celebrate your favorite hip-hop education-oriented organization on social media, using the hashtag #hiphopinnovates!

Hip-hop is GOOD for young people
Hip-hop is not bad for the youth. Hip-hop can be great for the youth.
Hip-hop music and culture are often singled out as being harmful and destructive for young people, full of bad influences, and generally negative. What is often not realized is that hip-hop has an incredible power to uplight and enlighten the lives of young people, and is doing so in many ways, all of the time.
Because of the ubiquitousness of corporate-controlled hip-hop content, many of us in hip-hop culture forget this -- and too many outside hip-hop culture have never even seen it.
So, once again, where media has failed, we must help educate the public about hip-hop’s ENTIRE story. On this episode, an example of how hip-hop is being used to HELP young people.
As always, if you know of an individual or organization using hip-hop to help youth, let us know on social media, and use the hashtag #hiphopinnovates!
For anything else, email us at info@hiphopadvocacy.org or hashtag #HipHopInnovates on social media.

Hip-Hop and Women
Women and hip-hop have always had a complicated relationship, but despite all the negative imagery and reputation hip-hop has, women remain the culture’s greatest gift. From Cindy Campbell to Cardi B, the ladies, have always been an integral part of hip-hop past, present, and future.
It is another topic I will come back to time and time again, as there is no way to summarize or highlight the depth of brilliance that women bring to the hip-hop table in one episode -- but for now, to kick it off, one of my favorite events is coming up, and it was only right I took a moment to spread the word.
We must use every opportunity to counter all the negative imagery and reputation, so be sure to let me know women or women-focused organizations that you know of in the hip-hop universe. I’m definitely going to be highlighting more as this series continues. Use the hashtag #hiphopinnovates!

Hip-Hop and Social Justice
Hip-hop and social justice. A match made in musical heaven. Though sometimes it doesn’t feel like our music and culture are living up to their potential to be agents of dissension and change, they absolutely continue to play an important part in the ongoing fight against injustice.
I am blessed to be involved with one such project, which uses an outside-of-the-box way to combine hip-hop with social justice journalism, and today I shared a bit about it.
Let us know if you have other examples of individuals or organizations that are using hip-hop in these ways. I’m definitely going to be highlighting more as this series continues.
I also shared a bunch of interesting hip-hop related events and conferences happening throughout the country. Feel free to send us yours so we can shout them out! Email us at info@hiphopadvocacy.org or hashtag #HipHopInnovates on social media.

President Obama and the Criticizing of Hip-Hop
President Barack Obama, on this episode of #HipHopInnovates with Manny Faces! (Sort of)...
I noticed an ‘article’ on the UK’s Daily Mail -- “Barack Obama Slams Hip-Hop and Rap Music For Promoting Toxic Masculinity,” an excerpt from his on-stage talk at the recent My Brother’s Keeper Alliance Summit.
While this is the Daily Mail after all, which is likely no friend to hip-hop, President Obama, or, some would say, integrity, it does point to a bit of a discouraging trend among people with large platforms and reach, in the way they speak about hip-hop, and about how their words are interpreted and amplified.
While these issues exist in hip-hop, I think it is very important to make sure the public understands that a) hip-hop doesn’t cause, nor can it solve, these larger issues and 2) there are MANY examples of hip-hop music and culture working to address and alleviate EXACTLY these issues, with great success -- IF given the chance -- something often made more difficult by these often repeated perceptions.
Today’s video is my fuller take on it. Please add your comments or reply on social media as to how YOU feel about this issue.
#HipHopInnovates with Manny Faces will highlight a couple of current news items, and an 'Artist of the Day,' someone who is going above and beyond mere entertainment -- Plus an occasional commentary here and there, notices about related upcoming conferences and events, and more, all in short clips that we plan to drop every weekday.

The need for hip-hop in libraries, museums, and universities
On this episode of #HipHopInnovates with Manny Faces, I spoke about the importance of including hip-hop-related programming in legacy institutions -- libraries, museums, and universities, highlighting recent examples from the Newark Public Library, in Newark, New Jersey.
I shared my writeup of one of those events, as well as a full editorial on the topic written after attending another, which I invite everyone to read, and share -- It’s vital for getting the institutions that haven’t thought much about hip-hop, to open their eyes to the relevance and brilliance of hip-hop, past, present, and future, and incorporate it into their halls.
Let us know in the comments or on social media about legacy institutions that ARE recognizing hip-hop properly, we’d love to know about them!
